WINGS June, 2004

June 4 - received ACS order with my CherryMax rivets for the aileron servo mount plate flanges, so I finished installing them.  I also received the proper MS screws for the AOA mount, as well as the Cleaveland #4 screw dimple dies.  I also received new, shorter -S58 (10R16) AN509 screws for mounting the aileron servo, so I will install those with Karla's help when she gets home.  I also need her to help me do the #4 dimple for the AOA mount.  I hadn't really noticed a difference between the flat aileron servo mount plate and the curve in the wing skin when I did the wing servo, but after I noticed in on the elevator servo mounting, I went back to the wing, and I can see where the slight curve in the skin has been flattened by the plates there. It's from the spar going about 9" aft, in the 4th bay from outboard.   This isn't good, as the wing curve is more critical than the fuselage curve.  I called Van's about it, and Ken said don't worry about such a slight flattening.  He said if it was so small (maybe 1/16") a flattening that I didn't notice it as I was doing it, and it's only 9" length between 2 ribs, it won't affect flying.  Waiting for Karla's help on installing servo screws and dimpling for the AOA screws.  1.0 hr

This pic shows the flattening of the upper wing skin where the aileron servo mount plate pulled it flat.  It's not too bad, and Ken says it won't affect flying, but it's one more imperfection I have to live with.

It may be a bit hard to see, but on the top is the screw that came with the AOA kit, with a head angle of less than 90 degrees, and on the bottom is the proper MS screw with a 100 degree head.

This is my test/sample piece for testing how the #4 screw heads fit.  After experimenting, I found that if I use the #4 dimple die first, it opens the #35 hole enough to get a #30 1/8" dimple die into the hole, and then the screw head sits in there even better.

June 5 - Karla helped me swap out the aileron servo mount screws for the proper, shorter ones.  She also helped me do the #4 dimples in the upper and lower wing skins, using the plunger from the C-frame.    1.5 hr

June 6 - install and seal AOA probes.  Final install and torque the aileron servo mount screws.  1.0 hr

Here are the upper and lower AOA probes mounted and sealed with RTV.  After putting them in the RT wing, I realized I shoulda put them into the LT wing.  I had been focusing on putting all the "extras" into the RT wing, to counterbalance the pilot weight.  If I have to remove the HID landing light power pack some day, these will be in the way, as they share the same bay.  Oh well; I'll cross that bridge if/when I come to it.

Here is the aileron servo, completely mounted and torqued.  The rod end is still held on with temporary fasteners, though.

I mentioned these tent caterpillars last year at this time.  The infestation this year is unbelievable.  I pulled these off my front steps & front door.  I am killing hundreds of these every day.  There are so many coming into the front of my garage and house, it's almost a full time job killing them.  As soon as I kill all of them climbing up the front of the house, I go back to the garage, and there are more of them coming in.
